Member Association Facts

PURPOSE

ABWA provides professional training and personal development through a national network of college students, working women, business owners, and women in retirement. With 70,000 members and 14,000 local chapters across the United States, the Association provides opportunities for working women to gain career advancement and personal growth.

OUR HISTORY

At the close of World War II, many women who had joined the work force for the first time during the war were reluctant to give up their new found careers. Like you, they were striding down the professional path and they were exhilarated.

Hilary A. Bufton Jr., a Kansas City businessman, recognized this. He saw the positive impact women were having on businesses and, along with three businesswomen, created a national support network for working women.

On September, 22, 1949, the American Business Women's Association was founded. In its proud history, ABWA has dedicated resources to women's education and provided workplace skills and career-development training for more than half a million women.
