 Ask Better Questions

by Pauline Kehm, Certified Professional Coach

Do you want better results in your life?  Try asking better questions.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."  If you want different results in your professional or personal life, you are most likely going to have to change your current behavior.  The alternative is waiting for circumstances or people around you to change.  Even if that was a realistic option, how long are you willing to wait?

The most effective way to begin to change behavior is to question it.  It really does come down to "how's that working for you?"  We all have conditioned, habitual thoughts and emotions and, by just asking a powerful question or two, you can interrupt your reflexive reactions and consciously choose a more productive approach in any situation.  Try incorporating these empowering questions into your life and see what benefits you receive.

1.      What do I want the outcome to be? It's pretty hard to get somewhere if you don't know where it is. Knowing what you want in any situation is like having a defined destination. Whether it's a productive business meeting where everyone feels heard, or a dinner with friends or family filled with warmth and support, beginning with an end in mind helps you set a course, and allows you to correct course as necessary to achieve your desired outcome.

2.      What's another way to look at this?  Our perceptions define our reality.  Unfortunately, we all have the narrow perspective of our own experience.  A great way broaden that perspective is to ask what else might be going on.  What might the other person(s) be thinking or feeling?  What opportunities are available here?  If you take the "me" out of the situation, what do you see?  Expanding your viewpoint helps quiet emotions and allows you to see your options more clearly.

3.      Is this true?  Our beliefs are just thoughts we've practiced for a long time. We've accumulated them since childhood, and many have nothing to do with who we are today.  Get to know your belief system by listening to your external and internal dialogue.  What do you tell yourself over and over, and does it serve you or limit you?  As you discover limiting beliefs, examine them under the light.  Are they true?  Will they get you where you want to go, or is it time to practice some new thoughts?

4.      What's one thing I could do more of to get what I want?  And its converse, "what's one thing I could do less of?"  The more specific the answer, the better the outcome.  "Eat healthier" may become "bring lunch and healthy snacks from home four days a week."  Instead of "get more clients," try "identify and contact fifteen prospects per week."  Chances are you know what's necessary to move forward, and also how you're holding yourself back. If you want more progress, focus on one activity, get specific and take action.

5.      What can I learn from this?  Every experience offers an opportunity for growth.  Did you achieve the goal you hoped for? What would you do differently next time? How did it feel?  If it felt good, you're learning what works.  If it didn't, something's out of alignment.  We all receive constant feedback from those around us and from our internal guidance system. Pay attention to the results you get, however subtle.  Learn what works for you, where you might try a fresh approach, and what no longer expresses who you truly are.

Tony Robbins said "quality questions create a quality life."  Questions are the number one tool of coaching and counseling.  They're a powerful way to engage and learn about others, and the best way to continually increase your self-awareness.

ColorwheelPaint Color:  How It Affects Our Perception and Our Mood

by Donna Dazzo

Did you realize that over 90 percent of the information we receive is through our eyes?  Did you know that the paint color of a room can affect your perception of that room?
RED makes a room appear smaller, but it comes into its own when set against cool colors (blue and green).
ORANGE also makes a room appear smaller but it is less oppressive than red.  Best used to decorate welcoming parts of the home.
YELLOW can brighten small rooms, however a bright yellow is not recommended for children's rooms as it has a vibrating intensity.
GREEN does well when used with contrasting colors or several shades of green, rather than all one shade.  It is a good color for a bedroom as it promotes relaxation.
BLUE that is pale will make a space feel light and airy. Darker tones make the space more relaxing, as in a bedroom, but if too dark, it can make the room depressing. Bright blues are good for children's rooms.
VIOLET or PURPLE should be used sparingly to maintain its effect of mystery, elegance and luxury.
WHITE used on all walls can be stark, cold and reflects too much light and glare.  It is best to use an off-white, pale cream or beige.

Did you realize that color can also drastically affect your mood?

RED stimulates our appetite and energizes us.
ORANGE inspires fun and laughter and lifts the spirit.
YELLOW stimulates and energizes the mind, benefits our memories, and maintains our positive frame of mind.
GREEN makes us feel tranquil, relaxed and rested.
BLUE calms us, helps us meditate, and fosters clear thinking.
VIOLET or PURPLE stimulates our senses and minds, promotes creativity and romance, but also can sedate us.
WHITE used on all walls can overstimulate the nervous system, making us feel tired and irritable.

Term Conversion:  A "Permanent" Solution

by Donna Desideri

Term insurance is typically purchased to protect a growing family from the catastrophic loss of a "breadwinner."  Lower initial premiums offer the flexibility to fit immediate needs. However, over time, a more permanent life insurance contract may be needed to help provide security and the potential for more stable premium payments for the future.

The low premium cost/high death benefit of term insurance is its most attractive feature. However, typically, term insurance premiums continue to rise with age. Some term contracts do offer premiums that remain level for a pre-determined number of years, but these contracts can experience significant premium increases in the future, or death benefits that decrease yearly. A policy that has long-term value and benefits, and the flexibility to help cope with change, may be important. Therefore, converting a term policy to a permanent contract may make sense depending on your needs.

Converting your term policy to a permanent life insurance contract may be important to your overall financial strategy depending on your goals and objectives. Like term insurance, permanent insurance provides a guaranteed death benefit, which is based on the financial strenght and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. There are also some other appealing benefits:

· Premiums can remain level for the life of your policy.
· The cash value of permanent life insurance can accumulate tax-deferred and can be borrowed at favorable rates or withdrawn.*
· You can use the policy's underlying cash values to help supplement retirement, college expenses, or other future cash needs through the aforementioned loans and withdrawals.*

The conversion privilege in most term policies offers those who cannot initially afford permanent insurance a great opportunity to convert to a permanent contract at a later date. Some term policies may offer a conversion credit that makes converting to permanent even more economical.
One particular advantage of converting from term to permanent, rather than purchasing a new permanent policy, is that there is generally no need for medical or financial requalification. (Note: This holds true if coverage amounts are to remain the same. If coverage is increased there may be a need to provide additional medical and financial information).

Converting your term insurance to a permanent contract may help provide additional security and protection. You may be comfortable knowing that the "contracts" death benefit will be there to help to provide for your family in the event of your untimely death. In addition, you may feel a sense of confidence knowing your cash value
has the potential to build on a tax-deferred basis. While this approach may not be for everyone, it is always wise to review all your insurance options. A representative can help you determine if converting an existing term policy to a permanent policy makes sense in your situation.

*Keep in mind that loans and partial surrenders from a life insurance contract will reduce the contracts death benefit and cash value. In the case of loans, interest will be charged on the amount borrowed.  Most insurance policies contain exclusions, limitations, reductions of benefits and terms for keeping them in force. Your representative will be glad to provide you with costs and complete details.

The Spectacular Summertime Concert Series

by IIonka Salisbury

Happy Spring from the Culture Corner and along with the anticipation of a warm Summer!  Here at the New York Philharmonic we have been busy with the current 2009-10 season as we listen to the exciting and brilliant remarks from our audience commenting on their joy of listening to our magnificent musicians perform exceptional music in the world of the classics at Lincoln Center.

Speaking of Lincoln Center!  Everyone must visit and witness the exceptional constructional changes that have been happening and the beautiful greenery that has been planted around Lincoln Center.  Also, at different times of the day and evening the water fountain will dance...what a sight to behold!  Enjoy the surrounding restaurants or just simply sit outside and enjoy the energy of the Center for the ARTS!

The New York Philharmonic's 2009-10 season ends June 26, 2010 and with a moment to catch our breath we go right into the The Summertime Concert Series; which runs from June 29, 2010 through July 10, 2010.  Bramwell Tovey is our conductor and he brings a lightness and summer laughter to the concert hall.  Concerts such as Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges, Gershwin's An American in Paris, Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever, Puccini's La Boheme, and last; but not least Mozart's, The Marriage of Figaro ... I could go on and on!  Instead, log onto our Web site www.nyphil.org and review the wonderful Summertime Concert selections.

I know that I have summer houseguests looking to experience the warmth and friendliness of New York City when Central Park is in full bloom and the East River and Hudson River invite us to sit and just watch the water flow by; but evening comes along and now where do we go?  The choices are numerous and a wonderful Summertime Classical Concert tops the day off with all that is good in New York City and, well for that matter, life!

See you at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center this Summer!
